Student Health & Well-Being Primary Care (SHWB PC) is recruiting a Medical Assistant to work 5 days a week (40 hours per week) at the primary care clinic at either the East Baltimore or Homewood campus. The Medical Assistant will also provide cross coverage across all SHWB clinic sites. This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Primary Care at East Baltimore or Homewood, dependent upon the primary worksite.
The Medical Assistant (MA) provides vital support functions, including, but not limited to, rooming, intake, vitals, point of care tests, EKGs, vaccine and medication administration, phlebotomy, support for in-office procedures, and care gap management. The MA functions under the direct supervision and authority of the provider when performing clinical tasks during patient care. The MA maintains an inventory of examination/procedure room supplies, assists in the organization of efficient patient flow, and organizes the clinic environment to ensure patient safety. The MA participates in medication and procedure education for learners by providing brochures and literature, and may administer vaccines and medications as ordered by the provider. The MA documents care provided in the patient's medical record.
The MA will work collaboratively with other medical assistants across the three primary care clinics on the Homewood, East Baltimore, and Washington D.C. campuses, including providing cross-site coverage.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Obtains vital signs and patient history, such as medications, allergies, and smoking status.
Utilizes telephonic interpreter services as needed.
Performs in-house laboratory and screening tests, procedures, and treatments per protocol and as ordered.
Administers medications and immunizations per protocol and as ordered.
Acts as a chaperone during all sensitive exams, including female gynecological exams, breast exams, and male genital exams.
Performs phlebotomy and IV placements.
Obtains all specimens, including venipuncture, as ordered.
Prepares lab specimens and accurately completes forms for transport.
Ensures safe and efficient patient flow, including reviewing clinic schedules and monitoring waiting rooms.
Tracks high-risk referrals, imaging, and lab tests.
Facilitates safe transitions of care.
Organizes practice environment to assure patient safety and quality outcomes.
Maintains exam rooms, lab(s), and supply storage areas, including quality controls, inventory, and coordinating with outside contractors for biohazard waste removal, laundry, etc.
Performs monthly equipment checks.
Contributes to designated quality measures for Health Maintenance and Disease Management tracking.
Supports team with administrative tasks associated with university health compliance, secure messages, forms, medication/insurance preauthorization, and verification of demographics and third-party insurance for billing needs (lab processing).
Adheres to standard precautions for infection control.
Attends monthly meetings, participates in committee work, and provides educational programming.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor, which may include assisting with new staff training, serving as a super user for EHR, etc.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
The successful candidate should have experience working with diverse young adult patient populations and appreciate and relate effectively to individuals who hold multiple, intersecting identities, including but not limited to historically marginalized and under-represented populations, various ages and developmental status, cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, international status, disability, gender, and sexual identities and presentations.
Must successfully complete all required and ongoing clinical and electronic health record-related training on a range of topics, including scheduling and point of care testing, as directed.
Must complete all required HIPAA and any other specified online training courses deemed necessary.
Ability to work independently within the scope of practice, as well as effectively in a team.
Demonstrates flexibility, the ability to anticipate needs, and multitasks in a busy and continually evolving environment.
Ability to diffuse difficult situations in a complex environment.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, Excel, and Word.
Knowledge of Power DMS is helpful.
Possess and demonstrate excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills.
Philosophical commitment to the care, development, and education of learners.
Has working knowledge of ambulatory outpatient medicine, including scheduling and medical insurance.
Representative on SHWB and JHU/JHMI Committees
Attend and participate in committees assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program, such as courses provided through Medix, community colleges, and/or vocational schools.
Certification/Registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, NAHP) required. If not currently certified/registered, must become certified/ registered within 180 days (6 months) of date of hire. Exam fees will be paid by the department. If a retest is required, associated fees are paid by the employee.
Current CPR certification by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross is required.
Must maintain MA and CPR certification/registration during the duration of employment in this position.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Two to five years’ experience in an ambulatory care setting.
